ELEGANCE OF TLUMAČOV

As early as 1921 the Ministry of Agriculture was considering the idea of establishing one large state stud farm for Moravia and Silesia. The idea of centralisation was also supported by economic reasons and the need to simplify the whole stud farm agenda. This task was to be performed by the farm in Tlumačov. The stud farm, which played a decisive role in the development of horses in Moravia, was founded in 1925 by merging three former stud farms in Opava, Hodonín and Olomouc Hejčín. A big role in its foundation was played, among other things, by the need to build a state stud farm for breeding foals purchased from the provincial breeding. A residual large estate in Tlumačov from the former property of Countess Maria Baltazzi was chosen as a suitable building. It consisted of five manors: Tlumačov, Skály, Terezov, Buňov and Otrokovice, with a total area of 533 ha.

The main mission of the newly established stud farm was to ensure breeding in the provincial horse breeding. Already in the year of the foundation of the stud farm 220 warm-blooded and 156 cold-blooded stallions were concentrated in Tlumačov. The number of stallions changed continuously in the following years, sometimes in favour of warm-blooded horses, sometimes in favour of cold-blooded horses. From 1960 onwards, trotting horses were also bred for racing purposes in the stud farm. At the same time as the breeding herd was created, a racing stable was built on the premises of the central stud farm and a training track was built nearby.

Since 1928, the stud farm organized the famous breeding days, which became popular with the public over time. After the floods of 1997, the terrain of the racecourse was permanently waterlogged. The breeding days were therefore moved to the central yard of the stud farm. Nevertheless, in somewhat cramped conditions, the stud farm staff and invited guests demonstrated their riding and carriage driving skills and presented their breeding achievements to the general professional and general public. On the occasion of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Tlumačov Stud Farm, the employees decided to bring the tradition of the Equestrian Days back to the Bahňák Racecourse, which after many years became eligible to host the event again.

Today, the Tlumačov Stud Farm continues to perform the tasks for which it was established. It ensures reproduction in the provincial breeding, early testing of foals of warm-blooded and cold-blooded breeds and subsequent production of sires for the provincial breeding. It organises breeding and sporting events, cooperates with secondary and higher education institutions in providing education for the professional and general public. It is also fundamentally concerned with preserving the state property entrusted to it in such a way that it can be passed on to future generations in the best possible condition.

In the buildings of the central yard there is, among other things, a reproduction centre for the production and distribution of insemination doses for the needs of breeders in the country breeding, training of horses under saddle and in the harness Part of the premises is leased to the Mounted Police of the Zlín Region.

Horse breeding is carried out in the yard of Skála, where mares with foals are stabled. For the breeding of foals there is a test nursery in the Buňov yard with an adjacent pasture area.
